Any industry that needs to package material, like food or animal feed, can benefit from a heat sealer machine. These devices are efficient enough to close up hundreds of bags every hour, but they only work on thermosealable materials. This includes a number of plastic and polymer materials. Paper bags are not safe to close up this way because they are flammable. There are multiple bag closing designs that use thermal energy, including impulse closers, and band closers. Advanced models use hot air to meld materials together.

In general, a heat sealer machine works by applying thermal energy to the top of the container. If the material is thermosealable, it only takes a second or two to flash melt both of the bags ends together. There is no residue, and the process is completely safe. Some are also designed with conveyor systems that can direct the containers to a loading or pallet system once closed up.

An impulse heat sealer machine can either be hand-operated or pedal-operated. In both cases, they must be manually operated, so they are most useful in applications where speed is not a major concern. They function with a pair of jaws that grab the top of the container. Once the container is in place, a quick burst of electricity is charged through the jaws. This causes them to output a large amount of thermal energy closing up the top of the bag. This device is compatible with most materials, including cellophane, PE, LDPE, HDPE, PVC, PP, OPP, BOPP, and MOPP. The jaws are normally infused with PTFE (Teflon), making them a safe thermal conductor in nearly all applications.

The most popular design for industrial applications is the band heat sealer machine
. Like impulse closers, they use a pair of thermal surfaces to flash melt container ends together. Unlike impulse devices, they don’t use an electrical current, but thermal blocks that can be calibrated for any temperature. When in operation, the device grabs the open container with a pair of bands spun by a rotor. The bag is carried through a set of thermal blocks and a set of cooling blocks to quickly melt and close up the end of the container. These models are the most popular design for industrial applications because they require little attention from an operator. In most cases, all the operator has to do is set the temperature and oversee its function. Most band closers are built with conveyors that can direct the product to other areas of a processing facility. They can be calibrated to close up containers either vertically or horizontally, and can handle hundreds of pounds of weight. Some come with PTFE bands that can be used with most thermosealable materials.

In recent years, some models have been designed to operate with hot air instead of thermal blocks or bands. This heat sealer machine funnels superheated air to the part of the container to be closed up. High efficiency models can close up a bag in a couple of seconds. Some models also come with an airwash that clears the seal area of dirt and other particles, ensuring perfect operation.
